Heran is Out of Surgery & Breathing On Her Own in ICU
May 29, 2009 by Jeremy · 640 Comments

Heran’s surgery was not quite the masterpiece that the doctors were hoping for. Unfortunately by the time a child reaches 7 years old there are so many years of damage that have been done to the heart by overworking, high pressure, and lack of oxygen that some of the damage is irreversible.
In Heran’s case, her pulmonary pressure was too high to perform the Fontain procedure they had hoped to do. But they were very happy with the by-pass they performed and though her pressures are still higher than they’d like, they predict she will leave ICU tonight and return to Iraq in a few days.
We’ll probably talk about a second surgery for Heran in the next year or two to finish the Fontain procedure.
In any case, she is doing wonderfully! One of her doctors said she was “perfect!”

Roman is Doing Amazing & Out of ICU with his Mother
May 28, 2009 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

This is a picture of Roman after surgery. This little two year old was rushed into our group at the last minute due to what the Iraqi doctors understood to be the urgency of his condition.
Just these few days later and he has been released from ICU and is playing with cars in his room, watching TV, eating soup, and doing wonderfully!

Heran Goes Into Surgery Looking Blue
May 28, 2009 by Jeremy · 41 Comments

Heran on her way into surgery with very low blood-oxygen saturation.
She has emmerged from surgery and is recovering in ICU where her blood-oxygen levels are now at over 90%. That – and all other signs – say that she is doing well!

Shad Makes it Through Surgery!
May 27, 2009 by Jeremy · 1 Comment

This is what a fighting chance at life looks like!
But Shad’s dad couldn’t stand it… he said he didn’t want to see his son like this. He’ll return to ICU once they take out the tubes and have him more stable.
Nonetheless, Shad’s father understands the ramifications of this life-saving surgery and is full of joy and hope today.
From Shad’s family, Roman’s family, and all of us at the Preemptive Love Coalition “thanks!”

Little Roman is Out of Surgery & in ICU!
May 27, 2009 by Jeremy · 397 Comments

Roman is out of surgery and in ICU recovering just fine. His mother has been in to see him a number of time and is clearly very comforted and excited by how well he is doing.
For those of us who are non-medical professionals, it was certainly sad to see him crying and squirming amidst all the tubes and wires… but we trust he is well under the care of the ASM staff.

Shad & Heran Accepted to Surgery
May 25, 2009 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment
We just left the cardio catheterization lab at ASM Hospital in Istanbul where Dr. Cicek has accepted Shad (10 yr. boy) and Heran (7 yr. girl) to surgery. It was a phenomenal moment!
Upon going upstairs and telling Shad’s father and Heran’s mother we all erupted in hugs and celebration… praises to God and thanks to each other after a long day of waiting, playing, and patience. It was a moment we will never forget!

Roman goes to surgery at 10 a.m. Istanbul time, Tuesday morning.

Meet Heran
May 25, 2009 by Jeremy · 871 Comments
Heran is a 7 year old girl, the youngest of 7 children. Families tend to be much bigger in Iraq! She’s much younger than the rest of her siblings and they all treat her like a little princess! Heran is currently at our partner hospital, Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi (ASM) in Turkey waiting to see if she will be accepted to life-saving heart surgery or if it is too late (and God-willing, it is not).
Everyone in her large family is so happy that she’s finally able to have a chance at the surgery that she needs and is so thankful to PLC and everyone around the world that made this essential next step possible.
Hiran is very small for her age, hopefully after her surgery she will gain some weight and the symptoms from which she currently suffers will be gone forever. She loves coloring, playing with her doll and trying to help her older sisters around the house. She has a very fun little personality, she makes us laugh a lot every time we are around her!
Keep checking back as we’ll do our best to keep you updated over the next few days of diagnostic tests, decisions, and – hopefully! – surgery.

Meet Roman
May 25, 2009 by Jeremy · 907 Comments
Roman is a 2 and half year old boy who is currently at our partner hospital, Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi (ASM) in Turkey waiting for his life-saving heart surgery (scheduled for Tuesday morning).
Roman is the youngest of 3 boys. His 2 older brothers clearly love him very much. Rahand, one of the brothers, told me how much he was going to miss Roman while for was gone. Roman is such a sweet kid, he’s very shy when you first meet him but he’s gradually warming up to us now and I he gives us a few cute smiles now when we see him!
Roman’s favorite thing to do is to play outside on his tricycle. Hopefully after his surgery he will have even more energy to do the things he loves most.
Check back (or subscribe by RSS) for more updates after his surgery tomorrow.

Iraq: The Forgotten Story Unveiled in England
May 23, 2009 by Jeremy · Comments Off

Shortly after we began our work in 2007, under the direction of PLC co-founder Cody Fisher, the Preemptive Love Coalition set out to use original Iraqi art as a means of fulfilling our three-fold mission of (1) funding life-saving heart surgeries for Iraqi kids; (2) increasing cooperation between communities at odds; (3) and investing foreign revenue into local Iraqi economies.
On May 22, 2009, the Preemptive Love Coalition unveiled IRAQ – THE FORGOTTEN STORY at our inaugural event outside London, England. The Forgotten Story features the work of 6 Iraqi artists and tells the story of life in Iraq under Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath Regime through their eyes.
But this is not a backward looking collection. The purpose of pulling together these stories and touring them around the world is to look forward together, for the future of Iraq.
For more information on the current event in Luton, England and for inquiries about future events, please visit our partners, A Thin Place, at www.AThinPlace.org.
