Mohammed Recovering in ICU & Expected to Stay for a Few Days
July 25, 2009 by Jeremy · 7 Comments

Mohammed received a full correction from his TOF/DORV and is recovering in ICU. He’s expected to sleep on the medicine through the night when his dad will join him.
His dad cried great tears of joy and happiness (and probably not a little sadness) at seeing his son hooked up to the tubes in ICU. It’s a terribly mixed feeling of relief and grief to see your child, supposedly healed, hooked up to so many monitors and sedated so heavily.
Doctors are very happy and hopeful and “all is well” with Mohammed.

The Wait is Over! Mohammed’s Surgery a Complete Success; All 5 Defects Corrected
July 24, 2009 by Jeremy · 35 Comments
PUSH PLAY ABOVE TO VIEW PARTS OF MOHAMMED’S SURGERY. Video shot by one of PLC’s summer interns, Benjamin Landis, from the middle of Mohammed’s surgery with Dr. Sertaç Çiçek and Dr. Ahmed Arsalan.
Mohammed’s surgery lasted longer than was expected… which should have probably have been expected when correcting FIVE different heart problems in an eleven year old boy.
His father waited for his son in Turkey. His family waited in Iraq. And even as he’s emerged from surgery there is the wait before he comes out of ICU. And once he returns to his very troubled city in Iraq, there is the constant waiting for some sort of solution – or some sort of chaos.
The wait is the hardest part… Thankfully, Mohammed came out of surgery with flying colors (none of which were BLUE). Most of the waiting is over. There is life to be lived ahead of him now!

Mazyar in Surgery for His 2nd Surgery in a Year – Expecting Full Correction
July 24, 2009 by Jeremy · 1 Comment

Mazyar got a bit of a delay on his surgery today after doctors Çiçek (pronounced CHEE-check, btw) and Arsalan needed a little more time than they expected for Mohammed’s TOF/DORV surgery. But Mazyar is in surgery now for his second surgery in the last year, the first of which was conducted in Iran by a facility that, for whatever reason, made a few decisions and performed a procedure that disappointed our Turkish experts.
In any case, a full correction is expected today for little three year old Mazyar and the risks have been estimated at an encouraging 2-3%.

Mohammed Heads to Surgery to Correct 5 Different Heart Problems
July 24, 2009 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Mohammed’s family has already been through enough, living on one of the fault line cities of Iraq’s Kurdish/Arab conflict. But today all the politics and problems of home faded into the background and one thing took center stage: Mohammed’s five separate heart problems and the question of whether or not this team of top-flight Turkish surgeons can achieve a total correction for Mohammed.
As we wait for the doctors and one of PLC’s summer interns who was taken in to photograph and observe the entire surgery to emerge again, we’ve spent time walking, talking, praying, and drink tea with Mohammed’s father. He is deeply grieved and has shed many tears in the last few hours… but his faith runs deep and he is resting entirely in the hope that God will bring his son through this very difficult surgery.
So are we….

Ruzhan Out of Surgery & Living off the Strength of Her Own Heart & Lungs in ICU
July 23, 2009 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Ruzhan had a phenomenal surgery and the doctors were able to do exactly what they planned to do, achieving a total correction. She is now resting in ICU without the aid of any machines. She will be extubated tonight and should be back in her private room tomorrow by noon!

Ruzhan is in Surgery – Worrisome Waiting Begins for Her Father & Family in Iraq
July 23, 2009 by Jeremy · 3 Comments

After twelve hours of no food or drink, and after a few hours of playing at the hospital in the morning with PLC staff and summer interns, Ruzhan was taken to surgery at 11:30 a.m. in what doctors hope will be a total correction of her congenital heart condition.
Her father has been full of grief this morning, but we are doing our best to comfort him in his worry and to let the presence and solidarity of friendship carry him through these difficult hours of waiting. After three or four hours we should know more…

Daryan Had Difficulty Giving Blood – Gained Only 1 lb. in Since Birth
July 22, 2009 by Jeremy · 3 Comments

You can probably discern this from the photos, but Daryan is not a normal four month old. At birth a “normal” newborn weighs more than Daryan weighs today as a four month old. What’s more is that Daryan is not growing. In the four months since birth he has only gained a single pound. He has had a lot of difficulty eating. And last night a great deal of energy was expended trying to acquire the six vials of blood that were needed to run his blood tests.
But Daryan is doing well this morning and we are hoping for a Friday surgery if all else goes well. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we are still waiting for an operability assessment and trying not to forget the sobriety of what was meant when Dr. Aso Faek in Iraq said Daryan was the “worst case” he’s ever seen.

Mohammed Very Scared & Not Eating As He Awaits Surgery
July 22, 2009 by Jeremy · 3 Comments

Note the Texas Longhorns football tee that he is wearing!

Mohammed is the oldest and most aware of all our kids right now. As a result, he is probably the most tuned in to the stories of Turkish-Kurdish tensions as told by his family as he prepared to come to Turkey. He is the most sensitive to the poking and prodding of nurses and doctors as they work in a different language. And he is the most accustomed to being able to express himself – only to find now that no one understands him. On top of it all, he is a man; or at least, he is told he is supposed to be.
So Mohammed is has been very affected by the first 12 hours in country and is having a hard time eating or calming down. This, in turn, has caused his father great grief.
One of the PLC summer interns has taken it on as his joy to serve Mohammed and entertain him during these difficult days. Hopefully the movies and the strolls in the park by the seaside hospital will be good for Mohammed’s soul as he waits for surgery.
