Meet Honya (Twitter: @honyamahdi)
October 31, 2009 by Jeremy · 860 Comments

Honya is a precious little girl. She is always smiling and giggling despite the lack of oxygen flowing in her blood to her brain and the rest of her body. At nine months old she weighs roughly 12 pounds. She loves music and toys that light up. Dr. Çiçek at the Johns Hopkins affiliated Anadolu Medical Center in Istanbul, Turkey is very hopeful that she will have a full correction and believes that she is likely to benefit significantly from surgical intervention.

A Visitor’s Perspective of Holistic Care
October 28, 2009 by matt · Leave a Comment

“The whole is more than the sum of its parts.”
-Aristotle
That’s a brilliant dead guy’s way of saying – there’s more to you than just what you’re made of! And, after two weeks of shadowing PLC family advocates, I’m thoroughly convinced that they hold to this maxim in their care of Iraqi children.
Because a child is so much more than a collection of organs and bones – or a diseased heart.
Serious energy, thought, and discussion is put into the pursuit of holistic care, and I’ve seen how much it costs them to go this extra mile. In reality, these surgeries could be mostly facilitated from a comfortable distance with a mocha and a fast computer, but the PLC staff has moved far from friends and family to provide much more than a well-funded medical procedure. They offer heart surgeries that allow for a better, longer life.
But, if you’re like me, you read ‘holistic’ and you’re a little skeptical. It’s an easy word to toss around, but actual application is a much more slippery story. And who can say what is or isn’t a ‘whole’ child? That’s why PLC freely admits that holistic care is an ongoing process. They know they haven’t arrived, but they also know that a 4 hour heart surgery is just one of the many needs an average Iraqi child faces, and they aim to meet them at any cost.
And the results of these lofty endeavors are beautiful. They allow Iraqis to see Americans in a different light, they create good will among local ethnic rivals, they help Muslims reconsider what they’ve been told about Christians, and they show whole families that they matter and God cares for them.
Adhering to this process of holistic care may seem like an inconceivable goal to some, but the bi-product is a peace that most Westerners assume and most Iraqis can’t even fathom.

5 WAYS TO SAVE A LIFE THIS OCTOBER!

5 WAYS TO SAVE A LIFE THIS OCTOBER!
1. Stuff home-made flyers about the Preemptive Love Coalition in your Halloween costume and drop them off at each house as you go trick-or-treatin’!
2. Throw a Halloween party and ask your friends to bring money to donate to Honya and Danar’s heart surgery this November!
3. Instead of buying a candy bar for a dollar – tell each trick-or-treater that you’re donating a dollar to the Preemptive Love Coalition for each trick-or-treater that shows up to your door! (extra points for taking a picture of the reaction on their face when you tell them that)
4. Sell your candy to your little brother or sister and use that money to put Honya and Danar on a plane to receive life saving heart surgery!
5. Enter an amount below to save a life right NOW!
| Little Honya is next child from Iraq in line for life-saving heart surgery. The chambers of her heart are enlarged and she has a huge hole in a very critical place. We want to fly her to Istanbul, Turkey on November 8, 2009. But before she can go, we need to cover the cost of airfare for her and her mother ($405). Donation: |
||||
| Danar is is your average three year old boy… except that he was recently hospitalized after turning blue while playing with his brother from a lack of oxygen in his blood. In other kids, we’ve seen this lead to brain damage. Danar has dodged that thus far. We still require roundtrip airfare ($822) for two before sending him in November. But this surgery is likely to do more than merely help Danar avoid brain damage… we can actually set Danar free to live! Donation: |

| FULLY FUNDED! Mohammad Star is a great candidate for surgery! He will be one of the lowest risk cases in our November group and is the most likely to benefit from the positive impact of his surgery. Thanks to the generous donation of the Qaiwan Group in Iraq, Mohammad’s surgery has been fully funded in conjunction with our Local Solutions fundraising program. | ||||

| David Statham visited PLC in Iraq in April 2009 after his wife bought an intriguing shirt that said, “Buy Shoes. Save Lives.” on it. Statham, Technology Manager for Toyota Motor Sales (USA) for his day job, has gone on to raise thousands of dollars and tons of awareness for PLC in Toyota and in his home state of California. Statham also serves on the PLC Advisory Board. |

Idrees is Selected for Life-Saving Heart Surgery – Dances with Siblings in Celebration!

We traveled yesterday to Kirkuk – one of Iraq’s most volatile cities – to visit the home of Idrees and to let his family know of his having been selected for heart surgery in January 2010. As talks progressed about logistics and prospective dates for his surgery, I was outside with the kids.
Push play above to see an audio slideshow of all I saw… In making this, it was our hope that this would further change the way we all look at Iraqis. They are not helpless or hopeless. Even in a volatile city like Kirkuk – and even when facing life-threatening odds – they are all, Kurds, Arabs, Turkomen – resilient people full of hopes and dreams and most of them, like Idrees’s family, stand ready to help themselves when given the opportunity.
Press play above!

October 14, 2009 by matt · Leave a Comment

Schwana is the success story most parents and PLC staff members dream of. Only 5 months after receiving a crucial heart surgery, his parents proudly told us that he’d started school, gained weight and that we should have a feast! So we did!

Visitors in Iraq find PLC caring for little Heran herself & not just treating her as a project
October 7, 2009 by matt · Leave a Comment

Heran underwent a successful surgery last February, and yesterday’s follow up visit indicates continued improvement. She was all giggles as she played with Ruth, a PLC Family Advocate, by hiding her keys and showing off her English homework.
But the doctors have told her she has to gain weight in order to be eligible for a much-needed second round of surgery. Only further visits and checkups will tell if or when she’ll be eligible.
Being first time visitors, my wife and I were eager to experience PLC’s follow up process with the kids. On the practical side, these visits are for monitoring the kid’s condition pre- and post-op, but we also saw a relational aspect to it that goes beyond just a simple checkup or examination. We knew PLC was passionate about caring for Heran’s heart, now we know they’re also passionate about caring for her.

SWEET LITTLE RANU GAINS MUCH-NEEDED WEIGHT & STARTS SCHOOL AFTER LIFE-SAVING SURGERY
October 6, 2009 by Joshua · 1 Comment

Poses for a picture… never camera shy!

You just can’t stop this girl from smiling!

Eating pomegranate seeds by the bowl-full!
I went with PLC’s Family Services Director, Jessica Courtney, to visit Ranu Bahadeen and her family on Tuesday in what turned out to be one of the most enjoyable home visits I’ve been on.
This little girl was really shy at first, given it was my first visit to their home, but by the end, I didn’t want to leave! She was so adorable. We started this game of stealing the pomegranates from each other’s bowls…..which ended in hilarious laughter and wishing we didn’t have to leave…
A few months ago her parents didn’t know if Ranu would be alive today. But thanks to you and your kindness, her life-saving surgery has provided her with a brand new life. She’s gained some much needed weight, has more energy, and is now going to school for the first time!
WHAT A DIFFERENCE YOU MADE IN THE WORLD OF THIS FAMILY!
