Chro went to surgery on Tuesday after being rescheduled due to an emergency surgery in the ICU for another child last Friday. The surgery was ruled a “total correction” by the surgical team, much to the relief of her pregnant mother and family back in Iraq.

The next major step is extubation… Stay tuned for more updates on Chro’s amazing progress thanks to you!

Nivar is Clear to Return to Iraq with a Happy, Healthy Heart

Everyone was cheers and smiles today when we found out that Nivar has been given a clean “fit to fly” bill of health. Initially she was cleared to go home to her mom, older brother, and brand new baby sister in Iraq on Thursday, but seat availability on the flight has caused us to push her back until Saturday. Still, this is the moment! This is the moment we work for so hard – to see these kids well enough to get on with their lives. To declare that they don’t need us anymore – at least not in the same way they once did.

We could not have done this without you. I hope you have enjoyed seeing Nivar go from her village in Iraq to heart surgery and back. With a sparse staff in Iraq for Fall 2010, we will probably not have very many updates on Nivar in the coming months. But we will do our best to keep you apprized.

She is planning on being back in school – with a healthy heart and lots of energy! – in September! You’ve made this happen. You’ve given her her life back. You’ve given her energy and a chance to make a difference in the world. You’ve given her family love and hope. We are overwhelmed today at your kindness and compassion and the solidarity you’ve shown with Nivar’s parents.

With you,

Yahyah This little boy, Yahya, still needs a few thousand dollars to cover the costs of surgery and travel from Iraq to Istanbul so he can experience the same life-change you’ve given Nivar. Leah Rests, Doing Well in Her Private Room After Being Discharged from ICU

After a quick surgery on Thursday Leah rested in ICU for most of the day on Friday until being discharged into her mother’s care in their private room at the Anadolu Medical Center. There’s not much more to tell… she’s doing well, her mom is extremely relieved, we’re all thankful to have been a part of her healing, and we are continually astounded by what your generosity has accomplished in the lives of so many families in Iraq.

Yahyah Isn’t it great to see Leah out of surgery with a new start on life? Friday was another great day of progress for Nivar. She is still in ICU due to a small chest infection, but she is breathing on her own and eating. As soon as the infection is cleared up, she will be transferred to her room upstairs. Stay tuned for more from Istanbul on Nivar’s progress…

Chro Goes in to Surgery; Mom Sees Softer Side of Turkish Neighbors

July 23, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

When it’s your little girl going in to heart surgery, you want someone you can trust on your side. So when the person at your side is a so-called “enemy” – one who is willing to go to war with the mess inside your child’s chest where a heart is supposed to be – a lot of preconceived notions about this “enemy” begin to disappear.

And they get replaced with names of new friends.

Thanks to you Chro gets her heart surgery today. Thanks to you Chro’s family will also have new stories to tell about Westerners and Turks who genuinely care.

Stay tuned for post-surgical updates from Istanbul…

EDIT: A last minute complication in the ICU caused Chro’s surgery to be delayed for precautionary purposes. Due to the decreased surgical staff on the weekends, Chro’s surgery has been tentatively rescheduled for Tuesday.

Leah Receives Life-Altering Surgery While Summer Interns & Staff Fly Across the Atlantic

July 23, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

julygroup

While nine of our summer interns boarded various flights from Istanbul to their home states across America, Leah Ibrahim was under the skillful care of Dr. Sertaç Çiçek and his team receiving a life-altering - totally corrective – heart surgery. I phoned our local staff at the hospital while taxiing down the runaway before take off to get a final update (and then obediently turned off my cellular device). It stirred my heart to hear confirmation that Leah was indeed going into surgery just as we were taking flight. And it seemed like a fitting metaphor…

My airplane was taking me from one place to another. This surgery will certainly do the same for Leah. This morning she was another baby in Iraq with a heart defect. This morning she was doubly burdened by both mental and physical growth inhibitors. This morning she was one of eight children in her family and she was about to die.

Even as I disembarked in London, Leah had landed in a new place as well. Resting in ICU recovering from her surgery, Leah is still the same beautiful girl – but she’s in a new place. Now her body will start to grow in a more timely manner. Now her mental development will not be threatened by an underlying physical threat. And now her brothers and sisters can enjoy their childhood without the likelihood that they will learn at too young an age what it means to mourn the death of a sibling.

I see Leah and her family flying to great heights in the future because of this life-saving heart surgery that you’ve provided. Of course, she has other things that will complicate her life. We have had to ask ourselves whether our limited resources are best spent on children like Leah with other syndromes that might lessen the long-term impact of her surgery.

But I’ve never met a child with Down’s Syndrome that did not bring unbelievable joy to all those around them. And so, today, you’ve not only saved a life; you’ve literally preserved a massive deposit of joy that GOD has placed in our lives and in the lives of so many others because today you’ve saved Leah!

Photo of the (Yester)Day: Nivar Recovers in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

out-of-surgery800

While the risk of death and attendant complication associated with Nivar’s open heart surgery was estimated to be just 5%, there is still something that inside of us that say the human body should not be opened up and closed again; something that says that is excessively dangerous and causes us to hold our breath in anticipation of good news.

And that’s why this photo is so poignant. There is nothing as satisfying as hearing that your little one is out of surgery and that all went well and there is nothing like seeing her alive and well – all put back together again. Well, nothing except hearing that she’s being taken off of all the machinery and living entirely on her own… but that story is yet to come!

Nivar’s Surgery Results in Total Correction!

July 21, 2010 by Jeremy · 1 Comment

Nivar's Surgery

Clamps. Wow.

After nearly 5 hours in surgery we heard the news that Nivar had received a total correction for her heart defect and was resting under heavy sedation in ICU. Here is how one of our volunteers and donors on site described the scene as her father rushed to hear the news:

Have you ever observed something that made you feel just a little more alive than you did the second before? The senses sharpen, everything else around you stops, and it seems as if the state of your very existence could hinge upon your understanding of that precise moment. Life all of a sudden becomes more valuable and hope of something unintelligible, unexplainable and far off fills your being from deep within. THIS is how I felt when I dodged a father running to see his daughter’s doctor following the completion of her open heart surgery…

In the post-op consult we learned that Nivar has been misdiagnosed and that her complication was more severe than originally thought. Once her chest was opened up Nivar was found to have a defect known as “Double Outlet Right Ventricle” in which both great arteries arise wholly or in large part from the right ventricle. Dr. Çiçek corrected her great arteries and patched a massive hole between the lower chambers of her heart and sent her on her way.

We were able to place three of our summer interns in surgery yesterday – two pre-med students and a photographer – which was a very rewarding experience for all involved. Above are two snapshots of what they experienced during surgery….

Nivar is resting in ICU right now. We deeply appreciate your generosity in seeking to save Nivar’s life and your attentiveness this week as we’ve posted updates on her progress each step of the way. Has she captured your heart? You should tell someone about it!
