Leah Receives Life-Altering Surgery While Summer Interns & Staff Fly Across the Atlantic
July 23, 2010 by Jeremy

While nine of our summer interns boarded various flights from Istanbul to their home states across America, Leah Ibrahim was under the skillful care of Dr. Sertaç Çiçek and his team receiving a life-altering - totally corrective – heart surgery. I phoned our local staff at the hospital while taxiing down the runaway before take off to get a final update (and then obediently turned off my cellular device). It stirred my heart to hear confirmation that Leah was indeed going into surgery just as we were taking flight. And it seemed like a fitting metaphor…
My airplane was taking me from one place to another. This surgery will certainly do the same for Leah. This morning she was another baby in Iraq with a heart defect. This morning she was doubly burdened by both mental and physical growth inhibitors. This morning she was one of eight children in her family and she was about to die.
Even as I disembarked in London, Leah had landed in a new place as well. Resting in ICU recovering from her surgery, Leah is still the same beautiful girl – but she’s in a new place. Now her body will start to grow in a more timely manner. Now her mental development will not be threatened by an underlying physical threat. And now her brothers and sisters can enjoy their childhood without the likelihood that they will learn at too young an age what it means to mourn the death of a sibling.
I see Leah and her family flying to great heights in the future because of this life-saving heart surgery that you’ve provided. Of course, she has other things that will complicate her life. We have had to ask ourselves whether our limited resources are best spent on children like Leah with other syndromes that might lessen the long-term impact of her surgery.
But I’ve never met a child with Down’s Syndrome that did not bring unbelievable joy to all those around them. And so, today, you’ve not only saved a life; you’ve literally preserved a massive deposit of joy that GOD has placed in our lives and in the lives of so many others because today you’ve saved Leah!
