Advocate of the Week: Lawan Hawizy

Lawan Hawizy, an Iraqi-Kurd living in London, is our advocate of the week! How do you become an “Advocate of the Week”? You overcome chronic back pain and knee surgery and run a half marathon with three of your friends to raise money and awareness to pay for the life-saving heart surgery for a group of kids in Iraq needing lifesaving heart surgery.
This might not be our standard every week but when we talked with Lawan and heard his story, we knew this title belonged to him! Lawan and 27,000 others will run the Semi-Marathon De Paris on March 7th. The only difference is that Lawan’s running to save lives.

Our February group of kids comprises Kurds from all over northern Iraq, including Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, and Dohuk regions. They were all born with congenital heart disease and because of that they can’t play like the other kids and face death. They definitely cannot run like Lawan. But now, thanks to Lawan, kids like Mohammed (pictured left), Sara, and Lea have a chance at life and one day they too can be an advocate that’s willing to run miles in honor of those who can’t. | |||

This campaign was originally initiated in the name of a little girl named Daroon. Because of family fears of sending their child and her mother abroad for surgery to Turkey, they have withdrawn her name from our February Group. All funds previously raised in her name were donated online under the “February Surgery Group” line item (please see your receipt) and those funds will be used - along with any further donations - to meet the financial needs of the entire group, as some surgeries come in over/under budget. 1. Stuff home-made flyers about the Preemptive Love Coalition in your Halloween costume and drop them off at each house as you go trick-or-treatin’!
2. Throw a Halloween party and ask your friends to bring money to donate to Honya and Danar’s heart surgery this November!
3. Instead of buying a candy bar for a dollar - tell each trick-or-treater that you’re donating a dollar to the Preemptive Love Coalition for each trick-or-treater that shows up to your door! (extra points for taking a picture of the reaction on their face when you tell them that)
4. Sell your candy to your little brother or sister and use that money to put Honya and Danar on a plane to receive life saving heart surgery!

Danar is is your average three year old boy… except that he was recently hospitalized after turning blue while playing with his brother from a lack of oxygen in his blood. In other kids, we’ve seen this lead to brain damage. Danar has dodged that thus far. We still require roundtrip airfare ($822) for two before sending him in November. But this surgery is likely to do more than merely help Danar avoid brain damage… we can actually set Danar free to live! Donation: |

DC Kurdish Festival Rallies For New Hearts

This Saturday, Kurds from all over the United States are gathering in Washington DC to celebrate their culture and to to help save a life! Musicians, artists, poets, and dancers will all take the stage in what will end up being a twelve hour party to celebrate life!
The Festival’s hosted by our good friends at the Kurdish Youth Organization, KSO, and the Kurdish Youth Club who are dedicated to keeping the Kurdish culture and spirit alive in the next generation. This party will do exactly that by funding heart surgeries and helping save an entire generation of children with heart disease.
Let’s get this party started!
