“There are Few Things More Satisfying” – Reviewing a Year of Family Advocacy in Iraq

May 27, 2010 by Joshua · Leave a Comment

For those of you who have been following our blog this last year, you’ll remember this little guy! We went to visit him last summer in Chamchamal (the border city of Kirkuk) to talk through what was, at that point, his prospective surgery. Well, he had his surgery this past November and he’s doing great! We went to visit him the other day to check up on him and to visit with the family. Man, I love this little guy!

There’s something really beautiful about being here for a longer period of time− longer than the two-month summer internship which first brought me here in 2009. Now, almost a year later, I feel much more like a father, or an older brother, to these kids. I’m with them when they’re sick. I’m in their homes. I see them off to surgery. I welcome them home when their hearts are no longer broken. But what’s really important to me is that I watch them grow up, watch them as they live out the lives their repaired hearts now afford them. Kids like Danar really hit me.

He’s one of the ones I’ve been able to track the entire time. I was there when his family first brought him to our office. And I was there when we first visited his home.

And now, I’m here as he grows up finally able to do the things his heart once prevented him from doing. And there are few things more satisfying than this! I am part of a coalition. The coalition is not just the people in Iraq; it’s all our supporters.  We’re all doing it. I am here because of our shared vision for the future of Iraq and on behalf of the Danars of this country.

The ability to track these kids through the whole process  pushes me on − to see them back in their homes running and jumping after their hearts have healed. This is why we work.

For more information on how we plan to create this sort of impact in the lives of 30 children this August, please click to learn more about our Remedy Mission – a team of surgeons, doctors, and nurses we’re bringing into Iraq to perform surgeries and training this August.

Heran Has Infection Around Her Heart 9 Months After Surgery

Heran had surgery in May 2009 – the first of two surgeries she’ll need to be considered completely healed. Heran is currently sick with an infection in her heart and Dr. Aso, our local pediatric cardiologist in Iraq, has recommended that she stay in hospital for the course of her antibiotic treatment so that she can be closely monitored.

She was disappointed that she doesn’t have a nice hospital room with her own personal TV like she had during her at Anadolu Medical in Turkey. There aren’t any TV’s at all available for her to watch here so we were pleased that we were able to lend her a mini portable DVD player for her stay as it will be 6-7 weeks which is a long time for anyone and a lifetime for a 7-year-old girl. She was very excited about it!

She’s been very brave so far with so many blood tests and having her cannula site changed every few days. I’ve been visiting her every couple of days for countless games of ‘Uno’! She loves that game!

Heran has been sick a lot these past few months, so we’re hoping that after this infection clears up she will be able to be back at school and that her immune system will become stronger. Visiting is limited to just 2 days a week here so both her and her mother are missing the rest of the family plus she’s missing school a lot too.

We’re thankful for special permission to visit her anytime. So we’ll do our best to keep you posted on her progress.

Danar Discharged to His Private Room; Mom Laughs for Joy At His New Life Ahead

Danar post-surgery-2

Danar post-surgery-1

Danar's joyful mom-1

We’ve been on this journey with Danar and his family for a few months now. In fact, we know Danar because of a child named Honya we helped back in February 2009. But in all our history with this family, we’ve not seen smiles and happiness; openness, hope, and joy for the future like we saw today.

It’s hard to put this in to words. We trust that the smiles above convey the deep impact you’ve made on the future of Danar, his mom, his dad, their extended family, and the previously destroyed village in Iraq in which they live.

These smiles – and the depth of hope they convey – are one of the primary things we aim for in our work.

Isn’t it amazing to watch life-saving in progress? We are able to do this because thousands of people like you have given $10, $25, and $50 – or whatever they could – to impact the future of kids in Iraq.
Have you helped out yet? Would you give what you can today below?

Danar Doing Well, Off Life Support in ICU

Anadolu Medical Center ICU

Danar in ICU

Danar has been doing great and his mother is extremely relieved to see him without all the tubes and machines attached. This is one of the most critical steps for any child. This is the official move away from “critical condition.” So things are looking positive for Danar!

Part of how we are able to do this is owing to those who have committed to $25, $50, or $150 monthly sponsorships to impact the future of kids in Iraq.
Could you reorganize any current spending to see more kids on here? How about becoming a monthly sponsor today?

Doctors Decide to Take Danar Back in for 2nd Surgery to Repair Leakage in Valve

January 7, 2010 by Jeremy · 2 Comments

Prof. Sertaç Çiçek

Nurse Fatma & Dr. Fatma

“A lot of hospitals would have accepted the fix as ‘good enough’, but I was unhappy with the level of leakage… besides, this is not just any hospital.”

That’s how Prof. Sertaç Çiçek started our morning today, as Hamma Dana was being prepped for surgery, letting us know that he’d consulted with his team and decided to respond to the leakage they were seeing by ultrasound in Danar’s tricuspid valve. If you recall, they had to create a new valve for him yesterday from the pericardium around his heart after a bacterial infection had “destroyed” his valve unlike anything they’d ever seen.

In the end, they were able to significantly improve upon their work yesterday and reduce the leakage to nearly nothing. Danar is back in the ICU resting, with an even greater likelihood of a healthy life. The main priority now is for him to stay strong these next few hours on life support in ICU.

Infection of Endocardium Destroys Danar’s Valve Unlike Anything Doctors Have Seen

January 6, 2010 by Jeremy · 16 Comments

Ameliyathane - Operating Room

Washing Up...

The Human Heart

“It’s so strange. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” Those were the words Prof. Sertaç Çiçek used to describe Danar’s heart condition after seeing it up-close in surgery today.

The endocarditis – or inflamation of the inner layer of the heart, called the endocardium (click here for more) – had caused Danar’s heart to be very enlarged because it was overworking itself to compensate for the valved that had been (apparently) completely destroyed by the infection.

The team used his pericardium to create a new valve, which they did successfully and are very pleased with the “minimal leakage” that remains (due to the fact that this is not a REAL heart valve but something they’ve made for him). And once inside, the doctors did not find any evidence of septal defects between the atria or the ventricles.

Danar is resting in ICU right now, in critical condition. His mom has been in to see him and hopes to stay by his side tomorrow or the next day after extubation. The surgery was the easy part. ICU is the scary time for us. Please keep on eye out for news on Danar in the next 24 hours.
