Mohammed is Fit to Fly – Eager to See Mom, Brothers, & Sisters Tonight

August 6, 2009 by Jeremy · 8 Comments

mohammed-discharge

After an extra week of scares related to malnutrition and potential neurological problems, Mohammed is discharged and ready to go home on tonight’s flight to Iraq. Mohammed is being released today with a total correction of his heart, and though doctors were unable to put a name on the remaining symptoms related his other congenital problems, doctors are quite sure that his brain is doing well and that it is not the cause of the other symptoms.

All this amounts to very good news for Mohammed and he is very likely to have a strong, healthy future!

Mohammed’s Malnutrition Prompted MRI of Brain Today Revealing No Abnormalities – Fit to Fly Home on Thursday

Mohammed is still being tube-fed & will probably continue to be fed this way at home in Iraq for one month.

The last few days have been difficult for Mohammed and his dad as doctors diagnosed him initially with Tapia’s syndrome – a congenital problem affecting the vocal chords, causing atrophy of the tongue, and other problems. But after a full check up with a neurologist on Saturday, doctors wanted to run an MRI of his brain to see why “ten or eleven different nerves were so seriously affected by his condition.”

The morning was very tense as we talked through the implications of what they might find in such a test.

Thankfully, the MRI revealed Mohammed’s brain to be “completely normal,” and though that leaves the doctors a little bit baffled as to why he has had difficulty eating, speaking, and why he has been so persistently malnourished, they have declared him “fit to fly” and we are preparing for a Thursday night departure.

His heart is in good shape and he will almost certainly go back to Iraq on a regimen of tube-feeding (to be carried out at home).

The doctors and PLC helped secure good prices from the hospital for Mohammed’s MRI, but ultimately PLC asked Mohammed’s family covered the minimal costs of these diagnostic tests for his brain, as PLC exists to fund treatment for hearts and not inquiries into neurological issues.

Mohammed Recovering in ICU & Expected to Stay for a Few Days

Mohammed received a full correction from his TOF/DORV and is recovering in ICU. He’s expected to sleep on the medicine through the night when his dad will join him.

His dad cried great tears of joy and happiness (and probably not a little sadness) at seeing his son hooked up to the tubes in ICU. It’s a terribly mixed feeling of relief and grief to see your child, supposedly healed, hooked up to so many monitors and sedated so heavily.

Doctors are very happy and hopeful and “all is well” with Mohammed.

The Wait is Over! Mohammed’s Surgery a Complete Success; All 5 Defects Corrected

July 24, 2009 by Jeremy · 35 Comments

PUSH PLAY ABOVE TO VIEW PARTS OF MOHAMMED’S SURGERY. Video shot by one of PLC’s summer interns, Benjamin Landis, from the middle of Mohammed’s surgery with Dr. Sertaç Çiçek and Dr. Ahmed Arsalan.

Mohammed’s surgery lasted longer than was expected… which should have probably have been expected when correcting FIVE different heart problems in an eleven year old boy.

His father waited for his son in Turkey. His family waited in Iraq. And even as he’s emerged from surgery there is the wait before he comes out of ICU. And once he returns to his very troubled city in Iraq, there is the constant waiting for some sort of solution – or some sort of chaos.

The wait is the hardest part… Thankfully, Mohammed came out of surgery with flying colors (none of which were BLUE). Most of the waiting is over. There is life to be lived ahead of him now!

Mohammed Heads to Surgery to Correct 5 Different Heart Problems

July 24, 2009 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

mohammed-to-surgery

Mohammed’s family has already been through enough, living on one of the fault line cities of Iraq’s Kurdish/Arab conflict. But today all the politics and problems of home faded into the background and one thing took center stage: Mohammed’s five separate heart problems and the question of whether or not this team of top-flight Turkish surgeons can achieve a total correction for Mohammed.

As we wait for the doctors and one of PLC’s summer interns who was taken in to photograph and observe the entire surgery to emerge again, we’ve spent time walking, talking, praying, and drink tea with Mohammed’s father. He is deeply grieved and has shed many tears in the last few hours… but his faith runs deep and he is resting entirely in the hope that God will bring his son through this very difficult surgery.

So are we….

Mohammed Very Scared & Not Eating As He Awaits Surgery

July 22, 2009 by Jeremy · 3 Comments

Note the Texas Longhorns football tee that he is wearing!

Mohammed is the oldest and most aware of all our kids right now. As a result, he is probably the most tuned in to the stories of Turkish-Kurdish tensions as told by his family as he prepared to come to Turkey. He is the most sensitive to the poking and prodding of nurses and doctors as they work in a different language. And he is the most accustomed to being able to express himself – only to find now that no one understands him. On top of it all, he is a man; or at least, he is told he is supposed to be.

So Mohammed is has been very affected by the first 12 hours in country and is having a hard time eating or calming down. This, in turn, has caused his father great grief.

One of the PLC summer interns has taken it on as his joy to serve Mohammed and entertain him during these difficult days. Hopefully the movies and the strolls in the park by the seaside hospital will be good for Mohammed’s soul as he waits for surgery.

Meet Mohammed

July 20, 2009 by Jessica · 57 Comments

hummad-web

Mohammed is eleven years old with a fourfold combination of heart problems called Tetralogy of Fallot. The doctors expect that his quality of life will be significantly improved by a relatively routine (still plenty difficult) heart surgery in Istanbul this week.

Mohammed and his family hail from one of the more “hot bed” regions of Iraq along the fault line of semi-autonomous Kurdish and Arab areas.

We always enjoy taking older kids to surgery because, though there is a considerable risk for older children, it’s always a joy to experience the journey with them and to hear them express in their own words the impact that a surgery makes on their well-being. Look for more of Mohammed’s own words and gratitude on the blog as the week goes on.

NOTE: In accordance with PLC’s desire to lend a hand-up by avoiding strict hand-outs (when possible), Mohammed’s family has funded approximately $5,000 of PLC’s highly-discounted surgery price themselves.

Jessica Courtney lives and loves in Iraq as a co-founder and Family Services Director of the Preemptive Love Coalition. She is also a mother of two children and is married to PLC's Executive Director, Jeremy Courtney. When not absorbed in caring for Iraqi children and sharing life with Iraqi families, she enjoys sewing and scrapbooking.
