Light at the End of the Tunnel or….

The Light

Danar On the Way to Surgery

Imagine your child or your three year old brother or sister was just wheeled down this hallway, in the hands of a group of strangers speaking a different language, about whom you’ve only heard terrifying stories of oppression and injustice against your people…. would you feel:

  1. Thankful to be receiving their help
  2. Distrustful or their motives
  3. Hopeful for your child
  4. Scared of their skill level

Obviously human emotions are not so simply encapsulated… but these are some of the emotions that each Kurd from Iraq (more so than the Arabs we serve) faces when placed in the humble position to receive help from the Turkish life-savers to the north of them.

We love Prof. Sertaç Çiçek’s quote: Medicine is the currency of peacemaking

And so it is for these four families this week. Danar is in surgery…. now we wait with his mother.

Danar’s Echo Shows No Septal Defects; Instead Infection Eats Away Tricuspid Valve

Danar's Sucks on Candy in Pre-Op Consult with Prof. Sertaç Çiçek

Both of the holes in Danar’s heart (an ASD and a VSD) that were previously seen by two cardiologists in Iraq have apparently closed over by themselves. Still, the infection in his heart is doing severe damage to Danar’s tricuspid valve. Doctors determined today in the consult to attempt a correction of the valve.

Because of Danar’s age and weight, an artificial valve – such as the ones funded by our Heartmender Tee – is not an option. They hope to correct and reconstruct the valve with the tissue of his own pericardium.

It was a long day of international travel, but Soma, Danar, Mohammed, & Hamma were still (mostly!) happy little kids when we arrived in Istanbul, Turkey at the Anadolu Medical Center and began blood tests, xrays, and EKGs.

Next comes some tough decisions about operability (particularly for Soma Salah) – and then the even harder process of choosing a course of action, performing the surgeries, and waiting through those dangerous – critical – hours during the sojourn through ICU. Stay tuned in the following places below:

Meet Danar (Twitter: @danarsami)

January 5, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Danar was scheduled to go initially in our November 2009 group but ran into some unfortunately passport problems that prevented him from leaving the country.

Thankfully, Danar has been able to hold on these last two months and join us in this, our first group, of 2010.

Danar is your average three year old boy. He loves to joke and play with his older brother. He has lived a mostly normal life except for having to sit out to rest while playing with friends or walking with his parents. He recently was hospitalized after turning blue while playing with his brother. His oxygen saturation is back up and he is ready to have surgery so that he can play like all the other boys.

Three More Children Selected & Waiting for Final Funding for November Surgeries

October 20, 2009 by Jeremy · 1 Comment

FULLY FUNDED! Little Honya is next child from Iraq in line for life-saving heart surgery. The chambers of her heart are enlarged and she has a huge hole in a very critical place. We want to fly her to Istanbul, Turkey on November 8, 2009.
Danar is is your average three year old boy… except that he was recently hospitalized after turning blue while playing with his brother from a lack of oxygen in his blood. In other kids, we’ve seen this lead to brain damage. Danar has dodged that thus far. We still require roundtrip airfare ($610) for two before sending him in November. But this surgery is likely to do more than merely help Danar avoid brain damage… we can actually set Danar free to live!

FULLY FUNDED! Mohammad Star is a great candidate for surgery! He will be one of the lowest risk cases in our November group and is the most likely to benefit from the positive impact of his surgery. Thanks to the generous donation of the Qaiwan Group in Iraq, Mohammad’s surgery has been fully funded in conjunction with our Local Solutions fundraising program.
