UPDATE on Three PLC Kids Three Months After Surgery
June 20, 2010 by Sophia · Leave a Comment

Driving the dusty highways of Iraq, past kids selling water on the side of the road and through security checkpoints, I’ve found that the journey to visit PLC patients is one of joy. These family visits after a child has been sent to surgery are used to see the child’s progress and their health condition post-surgery.
Last week I had the pleasure of visiting three children who have already undergone surgery. Mohammed, Deelan, and Sara received successful, life-saving heart surgeries earlier this year, and what a joy it was to see them doing well only a few months after!
Eleven-month-old Mohammed entered the reunion screaming his head off – a wonderful sign of healthy lungs and a healthy heart! Mohammed has been gaining weight since his return home and can happily entertain himself with a cell phone on his father’s lap, not unlike many babies his age.
Deelan, now one and a half years old, has had tremendous improvement in his condition. Before surgery Deelan was a very weak and frail little boy, but he is now feisty and pushing over tables and chairs!
As Jessica, the family services director for PLC, recalled, “Deelan was so weak and tired on the way to surgery… his mother just didn’t know what to do with him.” That doesn’t seem to be a problem for Deelan’s mother now since it appears she spends some of her time chasing Deelan as his tiny legs run in circles around the room.
Sara, who is 14 years old, had her surgery in March. Ever so polite, she carries herself with confidence and maturity. When asked what she hopes to be in the future, Sara said proudly that she wants to study medicine, because her doctors were, in her own words, “so good.”
Revisiting kids like these three that inspires us at PLC to continue our work here in Iraq. Some days the stories of sick children are hard to handle, but when we are able to see tired and defeated faces turn into healthy and smiling ones, it certainly gives us strength.

Sara is Doing Great Back in Iraq One Month After Surgery
April 25, 2010 by Jessica · Leave a Comment

Sara and her father came by our office on their way to a check-up with the local cardiologist, Dr. Aso Faeq.
It was a joy to see her and talk with her. She is doing great and is enjoying a little time off from school. We talked about picnics and the results of recent elections. They told us in detail of their visits to Deelan’s family, who also went to surgery in March. They amazed me with their love for this little boy they didn’t even know until they met at the airport on their way to Istanbul. It is great to see healed hearts, bright futures, and relationships formed (and/or sustained) across some recent - and some more historic - barriers between Turkmen, Kurd and Arab in the city of Kirkuk.
We ended our time with them celebrating with the fresh baklava and chocolates they brought to say “thank you.” Thanks to all of you Woodway college students Sara is alive and thriving with her newly healed heart.

ADOPT A CHILD
|
|
Churches, universities, and other organized groups were the backbone of our large fundraising efforts in 2009—and now we’re looking for at least 12 churches, mosques, synagogues, universities, youth groups, etc to adopt an single Iraqi child to raise life-saving awareness and funds on his/her behalf. Group goals usually range between $5,000–10,000—though we’ve seen junior high groups raise over $8k and college students pull together $30k! |

Deelan, Dua, and Sara Arrive Home After Hassle with Airline
March 14, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment
Deelan, Dua, and Sara all went home on March 14 from Turkey with healed hearts, hopeful for the future ahead of them! Unfortunately, a tremendous amount of drama associated with the airline company and their departure wrapped us up for much of the week, unable to find much time to blog with reduced staff.
There has been a lot of finger pointing this week, but the airline did not schedule our kids home on the flight like they told us they had by email three days before the flight. This resulted in three kids, three moms, and one of our staff arriving at 9 p.m. at the airport only to hear that there was (1) no room left on the flight and (2) we didn’t have tickets for our kids in any case.
Somehow seats opened up and we were able to pay to “close” our tickets at the counter. But it left our kids in a terrible situation and the airline’s lack of cooperation was a huge trust-breaker. We’ll be considering other options for all future surgical and personal trips in/out of Iraq.
But at the end of the day, the children are all home safe, celebrating Newroz today - the “Kurdish” New Year!

Sara Enjoys a Visit from U.S. Supporters Who Funded Her Surgery
March 9, 2010 by Jeremy · 1 Comment
As cute as the babies are, we do enjoy interacting with these older kids. Watching them work through their fear, and seeing them come into their own in a foreign culture, is a real joy. Plus, it seems like the “mark” we’re leaving for life will be more profound for these adolescents.
If you’ll remember, Sara’s family comes from Kirkuk, Iraq. One of her cousins left Iraq over ten years ago and currently lives in Istanbul. So we’ll be discharging Sara into the care of her cousin this week so he can show her the sites and so they can reconnect a bit as a family.
But before she leaves, we were honored to host one of our biggest advocates and long-term supporters, Chelsea Pershall (center), and two friends (Erin [left] and Ashley [right]) for Spring Break in Istanbul. They came specifically to meet Sara, whose surgery they funded through a widespread grassroots effort on the Baylor University campus via FWCM.org.
Sara’s family was so grateful to meet these three girls and beyond the life-saving money they represent, found a lot of comfort from hours of broken English conversations and card games.

Sara Rests in Her Room After Surgery; Quickly Discharged from ICU
March 7, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment
Sara breezed through ICU in just 24 hours! She’s now back up in her room resting, spending time with her extended family who migrated away from their tumultuous city of Kirkuk years ago currently live in Istanbul.
She wasn’t really feeling like any more photos… I imagine I would not have been either! So we left her alone and let her rest after snapping this shot!

Sara’s Valve Surgery is a Complete Success!
March 5, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Drs. Sertaç & Ahmet Corrected a Life-threatening Problem w/ Sara’s Valve in a 4 hr. Surgery
Sara’s surgery was a complete success! And for a child living with a congenital heart disease for 14 years, that is no small celebration! Not every condition or child is the same, but generally speaking, congenital heart defects are best addressed at a young age. Years of damage and overcompensation often render a child inoperable or create attendant problems such as pulmonary hypertension.
It’s a joy to see Sara come through surgery with the exact corrective procedure that the doctors had planned on performing prior to surgery.
Yesterday it was virtually out of the question for Sara to marry and have children - her heart condition simply wouldn’t allow that sort of additional stress to her body.
Today, doctors estimate that they have extended her life by up to twenty years before she’s likely to need any additional procedures. At that point, the field of cardiac surgery will be more advanced, and it’s hard to even speculate what options may be available to her at that time. In any case, her heart is healed and her body is healing.
And if she wants to, she can even dream about having kids someday! It’s amazing what you’ve done!

Can You Imagine Sending Your Child - Like Sara’s Mom Did - Through These Doors for Heart Surgery?
March 5, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment
When I spend time with these two year olds, I just see my son, Micah. When I spend time with the four and five years olds, all I see is my daughter, Emma. And I’ll be honest, as often as I tell these parents not to worry and not to fear, it’s very hard for me to imagine sending my own kids down that corridor.
More information on the results of Sara’s surgery as soon as possible…

Sara Settles in to Her Room at Anadolu Medical Waiting for Morning Surgery
March 4, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment
Sara arrived late at night at the Anadolu Medical Center for surgery the next morning after hours of travel with her mom and the Preemptive Love Coalition’s Family Services Director. It was truly amazing to watch Sara caring for baby Deelan during their travel. And despite all the difficulty of traveling to a new place, she was still able to answer all her own questions about her health in a very composed way for the Turkish nurses when they came.
Doctors have given Sara’s family the choice of a mechanical valve or a more organic fix. After weighing the pros and cons, there was consensus all the way around to pursue the organic correction, which is estimated to keep Sara alive without much complication for an additional 20 years, allowing her to marry, have children, and reach her mid-thirties before she will likely need some sort of follow-up procedure.
More information after surgery….

Meet Sara (Twitter: SaraMuaeed)
March 4, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment
Meet Sara. Sara hails from the still contested, disputed, and much-disrupted city of Kirkuk, Iraq. So disrupted, in fact, that there were reportedly four bomb explosions in Kirkuk the day before Sara left for Turkey.
Sara’s father works in a local anti-terrorist security unit. Given the backdrop of “Arabization” reaching back decades, conventional Kurdish storytelling now often says that all the terrorists are Arabs and that all the danger lives in the Arab part of city.
Those of us at the Preemptive Love Coalition can speak to that terrible stereotype by referencing our own run-ins with Kurdish terror conspirators. So in hopes of tearing down harmful stereotypes, we’re excited that Sara’s family has drawn so close to baby Deelan’s mother during their surgical sojourn together in Turkey - because Deelan’s mother is an Arab from Kirkuk.
We brought Sara to surgery because of a valve problem she is having that is threatening her life and possibly the life of her future children. At 14 years old, the window of operability for Sara is narrowing. And if she had not experienced your kindness and received surgery, she would likely die during pregnancy or childbirth due to the extreme toll such changes take on the body.
Today, under the skill of Prof. Dr. Sertaç Çiçek, Sara will receive the valve repair she needs and - GOD willing - will be set free to enjoy her adolescent and adult life with much joy and little fear.
Sara is scheduled for surgery on Thursday. More to come…

Advocate of the Week: Lawan Hawizy
January 28, 2010 by Cody · Comments Off

Lawan Hawizy, an Iraqi-Kurd living in London, is our advocate of the week! How do you become an “Advocate of the Week”? You overcome chronic back pain and knee surgery and run a half marathon with three of your friends to raise money and awareness to pay for the life-saving heart surgery for a group of kids in Iraq needing lifesaving heart surgery.
This might not be our standard every week but when we talked with Lawan and heard his story, we knew this title belonged to him! Lawan and 27,000 others will run the Semi-Marathon De Paris on March 7th. The only difference is that Lawan’s running to save lives.
![]() |
Our February group of kids comprises Kurds from all over northern Iraq, including Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, and Dohuk regions. They were all born with congenital heart disease and because of that they can’t play like the other kids and face death. They definitely cannot run like Lawan. But now, thanks to Lawan, kids like Mohammed (pictured left), Sara, and Lea have a chance at life and one day they too can be an advocate that’s willing to run miles in honor of those who can’t. | |||

Join Lawan and his team in their fight for the lives of our February surgery group by donating the amount of your choice in the field below. All donations help the Preemptive Love Coalition send the group to life-saving heart surgery.

Some of our international customers have apparently been having problems donating. To make a gift over the phone using your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover), please call +1 805-245-4666 during normal business hours - Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Coast Time (GMT -8:00). |

This campaign was originally initiated in the name of a little girl named Daroon. Because of family fears of sending their child and her mother abroad for surgery to Turkey, they have withdrawn her name from our February Group. All funds previously raised in her name were donated online under the “February Surgery Group” line item (please see your receipt) and those funds will be used - along with any further donations - to meet the financial needs of the entire group, as some surgeries come in over/under budget.
