Sozyar Admitted to Hospital in Iraq for Pneumonia; Treatment Going Well

April 11, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Sozyar Sleeps Before Surgery

Sweet little Sozie is back in the hospital this week with pneumonia. Her heart is doing well but she will be in the children’s hospital here for a few weeks receiving a strong antibiotic by IV and with a chest tube in until her lungs are clear.

Our family services team is checking in on her and she is doing well despite the infection. We have been in contact with our surgeon in Istanbul who says she should be well soon and the protocol our local pediatrician and cardiologist are following now is what she needs.

We hope she will be feeling better soon. Until then, she is in her bed asking for kisses on her feet and blowing kisses herself to everyone who comes to visit. We can’t wait to visit her at home. We know she must be very tired of hospital beds after these last two months. Despite all of this, her family is taking great care of her fighting to make sure she has all she needs to feel better soon.

Three Kids Headed Home with Happy, Healthy Hearts

March 10, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

At the Airport; Muhammed, Baroof, and Sozyar Head Back to Iraq
This doesn’t look like the happiest group of people, but trust us, they are! It was 6 a.m. at an airport! Few are happy in that context!

It’s been a great journey for Muhammed, Baroof, and Sozyar. Both Muhammed and Sozyar were “urgent.” It was unclear whether Muhammed or Baroof would even be operable. And look at them today!

In our talks today with Dr. Resmiye at the Anadolu Medical Center she used words like “miracle” and “unbelievable” and “they won their lives back” to describe these kids.

Usually we try to keep a healthy balance of the “miraculous” and that which can be reasonable calculated according to the medical numbers. It’s hard to build a budget around miracles! But we are thrilled to celebrate GOD’s kindness in the lives of these children alongside the Turkish doctors who, themselves, have said that it is GOD’s doing and not just their own.

By the time this posts, Muhammed, Baroof, and Sozyar will be resting at home – in the city or the village – with their daddies and extended families who have been missing them so much.

As much as the surgery at this point, the fact that you’ve paid for round trip airfare through our partnership with Atlasjet Airlines for these kids is a great source of comfort, because healing means precious little when it separates you from the ones you love the most!

These children are now enrolled in the Preemptive Love Followthrough program. We’ll track their progress as Baroof goes back to school and Muhammed and Sozyar learn how to walk, and we’ll offer a number of services to them for the next six months (and often, much longer).

Followthrough Program

Followthrough Program

With our Followthrough program we monitor a child’s healing and re-entry into their home culture, teach the importance of activity and a balanced diet, and address issues like racism and other radical ideologies. This amount represents the costs of medications, special needs, teaching materials, etc.

Sozyar’s Smiles (VIDEO)

March 10, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

When Sozyar came to our office a few weeks ago she was urgent enough for the referring organization to ask that we do everything we could to move her to the front of the line.

Within two weeks she was in surgery with Dr. Sertac Cicek in Istanbul, Turkey – that may be a record turnaround for any organization working on congenital heart disease issues in Iraq today.

After a few days recovering in ICU, she was discharged to her private room where she has been the last few days.

And look at her today!

Gone is the blue skin from lack of oxygen; gone is the threat to her life; and here to stay – for some time it seems – are smiles and joy and kisses and waves and “that winky thing” she does.

Hers is a story of cooperation. It’s a story of your kindness. It’s a story of compassion.

Thanks for all you’ve given for Sozyar to live.

With thanks and joy!

Sozyar Winks and Smiles, Doing Well in ICU

March 2, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Sozyar's Smiles!

It was my first chance to see Sozyar in ICU yesterday… and it was such a joy! In the Turkish language there is a phrase that is often used when speaking or playing with babies: Seni yiyerim!. The meaning is basically, “You are so adorably cute I could eat you!” I couldn’t help myself saying that to Sozyar last night. (DISCLAIMER: I had no intention of eating her).

Her mother was so laid back telling Sozyar to “smile big” or “do that winky eye thing” or “give a kiss to Uncle Jeremy.” The winky eye thing was my favorite! Though I didn’t begrudge her baby kisses either!

Our work is not easy – we work extremely long, sometimes erratic hours. We are constantly plagued by “the urgent” and have a hard time carving out room for the important. But in these moments with families – these unguarded moments of gratitude and humility when some of the cultural differences between us fade into the background – all of the difficulties of life in Iraq, separation from our own families, and whatever hardships we’ve gladly taken to ourselves to see this vision come to fruition really feel worth it.

Thanks for the privilege you give us each day to do this work. We genuinely hope we can introduce you to these families somehow, someday. If you are a college-aged or graduate student, you could even apply online for our internship and meet some of these families in Istanbul and Iraq this summer. For more information, please visit our internship page.

Sozyar is Resting, Doing Well, and on Life-Support in ICU

Sozyar’s surgery went great – exactly according to plan. Her situation is so complex that she will likely need a follow-up surgery in four or five years – but even with today’s fix, known as a bidirectional Glenn, she has the chance to live a much healthier, longer life than was imaginable just a few hours ago.

That said, no child is “out of the woods” until they are extubated and out of ICU. She is still in critical condition. Do pray for her.

From all of us at the Preemptive Love Coalition and her parents,

Isn’t it amazing to watch life-saving in progress? We are able to do this because people like you give $10, $25, and $50 – or whatever they could – to impact the future of kids in Iraq.
Have you helped out yet? Give any amount you can today below!

Sozyar’s Surgery Was a Success Thanks to the Perfusionist & the Whole Team!

Heart-Lung Machine

Heart-Lung Machine

Heart-Lung Machine

Did you ask yourself what this highly trained medical professional is doing sitting down in the middle of an intense, life-saving surgery? We did too the first time we saw it! But it turns out that most of the time, these heart surgeries – while interesting – are rather uneventful for a team that has logged thousands of hours together like our partners in Turkey.

Still, this man is not sitting down because he’s too good to stand up. This is – Hasan Solak – one of the perfusionists on Prof. Dr. Sertaç Çiçek’s surgical team. During Dr. Çiçek’s visit to Iraq last week we talked a great deal about the need for highly trained perfusionists if the centers that are in development in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Dohuk will ever be able to perform full-blown open-heart surgeries. So it seemed like a good time for us to pause and tell you a bit more about this critical, unsung role.

In short, the perfusionist is the one responsible for the operation of the “heart-lung” machine – or the pump - for cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries. Essentially, the machine replaces the heart and lungs and allows for surgery to be performed on those vital organs. It is such a critical role that it cannot be attended to by someone multitasking something else. The perfusionist’s sole job is to maintain the machine – to keep the patient alive.

For more information see the Perfusionist and Cardiopulmonary Bypass articles on Wikipedia.

Meet Sozyar (Twitter: @SozyarHamdan)

Meet Sozyar

The team of Turkish doctors personally pre-screened and selected Sozyar for surgery when they were with us in Iraq last week working with us to promote more local (Iraqi) solutions to these local problems.

Sozyar was referred to us by a local organization, saying she was in need of “urgent surgery.” Because of the tremendous cooperation of the Anadolu Medical Center and Prof. Dr. Sertaç Çiçek we are almost always able to fast track children like this and see them served before it’s too late. They visited us and we sent Sozyar to surgery in exactly two weeks. We could not do that without your faithful giving and the highly interested and capable Turkish team.

You can click here to read more on the Fontan procedure that the doctors plan on performing for Sozyar.

*In accordance with PLC’s desire to lend a hand-up by avoiding strict hand-outs (when possible), Sozyar’s family contributed $4,000 towards PLC’s highly-discounted surgery prices.

Advocate of the Week: Lawan Hawizy

January 28, 2010 by Cody · Comments Off

lawan-marathon1

Lawan Hawizy, an Iraqi-Kurd living in London, is our advocate of the week! How do you become an “Advocate of the Week”? You overcome chronic back pain and knee surgery and run a half marathon with three of your friends to raise money and awareness to pay for the life-saving heart surgery for a group of kids in Iraq needing lifesaving heart surgery.

This might not be our standard every week but when we talked with Lawan and heard his story, we knew this title belonged to him! Lawan and 27,000 others will run the Semi-Marathon De Paris on March 7th. The only difference is that Lawan’s running to save lives.

Our February group of kids comprises Kurds from all over northern Iraq, including Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, and Dohuk regions. They were all born with congenital heart disease and because of that they can’t play like the other kids and face death. They definitely cannot run like Lawan. But now, thanks to Lawan, kids like Mohammed (pictured left), Sara, and Lea have a chance at life and one day they too can be an advocate that’s willing to run miles in honor of those who can’t.
Join Lawan and his team in their fight for the lives of our February surgery group by donating the amount of your choice in the field below. All donations help the Preemptive Love Coalition send the group to life-saving heart surgery.

Some of our international customers have apparently been having problems donating. To make a gift over the phone using your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover), please call +1 805-245-4666 during normal business hours – Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Coast Time (GMT -8:00).

warning This campaign was originally initiated in the name of a little girl named Daroon. Because of family fears of sending their child and her mother abroad for surgery to Turkey, they have withdrawn her name from our February Group. All funds previously raised in her name were donated online under the “February Surgery Group” line item (please see your receipt) and those funds will be used – along with any further donations – to meet the financial needs of the entire group, as some surgeries come in over/under budget. For more information please email info[at]preemptivelove[dot]org.
