Mohammed Umed Fit to Fly Home to Iraq on Tuesday

January 25, 2010 by Jeremy · Comments Off

Mohammed Umed is Coming home!

It’s been a longer journey for Mohammed Umed than any of us hoped… three full weeks! But we’re so happy to announce that Mohammed has been cleared to fly home to his daddy and family in Iraq on Tuesday with a total correction and a clean bill of health!

As we wrap up our January surgery group we are deep into preparing our Feb/March combo group of 8-9 kids. This little guy, Baby Mohammed Adnan, is scheduled for surgery in that group. We are urgently collecting money for his surgery because doctors say that waiting any longer may leave him inoperable, facing imminent death. What a chance to make a profound difference in the life of a child and his family!

HEAL MOHAMMED’S HEART

Donate the amount of your choice to Baby Mohammed Adnan (square pic above) by entering it in the field below. All donations help the Preemptive Love Coalition send Mohammed (and/or any others in his group) to life-saving heart surgery.

Hamma Cleared for Tuesday Flight Home to Iraq

Just two weeks after leaving Iraq it’s exciting to know see Hamma headed out of Turkey on a Tuesday flight home to Iraq! More pictures of his progress to come once he lands back with his family and has some time to rest in Iraq…

Hamma Hamma Hamma Intubated in ICU Hamma Intubated in ICU Hamma Extubation sooner than later Hamma in room safe and sound Hamma'srelieved mom

One thing has been driven home through our work in Iraq this week: all other things equal, most Iraqis prefer to travel to Iran or Jordan for urgent and non-urgent medical care. Both Iran and Jordan have a history of helping Iraqi refugees and providing safe-haven during difficult times. On the other hand, among most Kurds (at least) in northern Iraq, there is a stigmatization of Turkey as a country that oppresses their own Kurdish minority, though much (unfortunately, not all) of those policies and pogroms have largely ceased in the last ten years.

Anadolu Medical Center is helping change the way people in Iraq think about their neighbors to the north. When Hamma’s mom lands back in country she will be faced with questions about “the Turks.” How were they? Were you scared to speak your language or be identified as a Kurd? Etc. She will pass on story after story of how she was respected and cared for. And by changing the way we think about each other, we just might be able to change the way we treat and relate to each other.

Isn’t it amazing to watch life-saving in progress? We are able to do this because thousands of people like you have given $10, $25, and $50 – or whatever they could – to impact the future of kids in Iraq.
Have you helped out yet? Would you give what you can today below?

Danar Arrives Back in Iraq Safely with Daddy; Drives 2 Hours Home to Village

Danar Sami - Alive and Well Back in Iraq

Danar arrived home in Iraq to his Daddy and older brother on Tuesday – just one week after leaving the country for life-saving heart surgery! I spent awhile talking with his father on the phone the last few days and the minutes in the airport lounge before they emerged through those doors were exciting! It’s such a joy to see a family reunited. If the tears of watching him send his child away last week were heart-wrenching, the joy of seeing them reunite with an eye toward a healthy, care-free future was enlivening and inspiring.

Never stop believing that you can make a difference in the world. In world of Danar’s family, you already have!

Danar is Fit to Fly Home on Tuesday; Takes with Him a Message of Peace

Danar's Echo

Cute Danar During Echo

All of Danar’s follow-up echos and tests show that he is doing extremely well! He has been deemed “fit to fly” home to Iraq on Tuesday. And when he and his mom do make it home, they will take with them – forever take with them – a different-than-usual story about the Turks to the north of them and the Americans who came from the West to their country.

Life-saving heart surgery; life-changing experiences of “the other”; of the person different from me; of that kind of person. What difference a week can make!

Meet Danar (Twitter: @danarsami)

January 5, 2010 by Jeremy · Leave a Comment

Danar was scheduled to go initially in our November 2009 group but ran into some unfortunately passport problems that prevented him from leaving the country.

Thankfully, Danar has been able to hold on these last two months and join us in this, our first group, of 2010.

Danar is your average three year old boy. He loves to joke and play with his older brother. He has lived a mostly normal life except for having to sit out to rest while playing with friends or walking with his parents. He recently was hospitalized after turning blue while playing with his brother. His oxygen saturation is back up and he is ready to have surgery so that he can play like all the other boys.

50 Family Focus + Two Teams of Turks = 90 Kids in 2010

To date, we’ve served 45 children by offering families a hand-up in their efforts to save their own children’s lives. We’ve seen poor families work harder and smarter to take part in our family participation program to fund a portion of their child’s surgery.

As we enter 2010 we plan to up the ante and send 50 children out to surgery in Istanbul, Turkey at the Anadolu Medical Center. We hope to do this by sending four children every month. (January’s group is already set and February and March are filling up quickly!). The price tag for these surgeries will be roughly $500,00 – with at least 50% of that amount coming from local Iraqi sources!

Additionally, we hope to make 2010 a year of investing in local infrastructure by creating forums for the exchange of knowledge, skills, and experience by bringing in foreign experts to operate and train local cardiologists, surgeons, and nurses to hasten the day of more local solutions to local problems in Iraq.

We aim to bring 2 surgical missions into Iraq this year to serve 40 additional children in local hospitals by training local surgeons, cardiologists, and nurses. We have already begun screening candidate hospitals, cardiologists, and surgeons to ensure our investments go to the most disciplined and visionary practitioners.

Kids like Honya, Vary, or Mohammad have made 2009 an amazing year. Does 90 kids mean that 2010 will be twice as joyous?

Baby Honya’s last day in the Hospital Before Going Home to Daddy

Its been no secret we think this little baby is adorable. And we know you do, too. I mean c’mon, look at this girl.

This is harder than it should be though.

We know its not the way this is supposed to be….we’re supposed to be excited about seeing her leave, going home to her family, back to normal life….but we’re going to miss seeing her each day!

Today, she is well rested and smiling a lot. Today, we are praising God for a successful surgery and the new life that has been given. In fact, today we’re grateful for our Followthrough program and the fact that we will continue to see this little girl grow up into the hope & future that has been provided for her.

And we’re grateful for you… because without you we could not have made this happen!

Vary’s Last Day in the Hospital – Leaving for Iraq Tomorrow!

November 16, 2009 by Joshua · 9 Comments

This is the happiest we’ve seen her since her arrival in Istanbul. Laughing with us, playing with us, dancing to the music playing on her room TV, she was as happy and healthy as could be hoped for.

The feeling of watching this little girl play is… well, what we work for. She is healed. She has been given new life. Her mom is at rest, no longer fearing her daughter’s heart; no longer being forced to live a cautious life because of it.

Vary has been healed, and now boards a plane with something that wasnt there when she left. Hope for the future.

Mohammad Coloring Pictures in His Room – Fit to Fly Home to Iraq Tomorrow Morning

November 9, 2009 by Jeremy · 405 Comments

hamma-after-resized

We told you in the amazing film of Mohammad’s surgery – made by PLC’s Joshua Gigliotti – about Mohammad’s mother’s tears and the weight of the burden that it is to entrust your only son to foreigners, in a foreign land, and to have your only access to life-saving services taking place in a foreign language. And though we told you that weight was lifted, there is still another weight that always remains: the weight of loneliness in having to bear all these life-and-death decisions without your spouse.

It’s not uncommon for other programs in the region to take children out of the country for months or more at a time. The logistics of scheduling surgeries with other hospitals and different policies about finances often cause Iraqi families themselves to be put in an even harder position in pursuit of life-saving solutions.

This is yet another reason why we are so grateful for all the amazing staff at the Anadolu Medical Center. They make scheduling, pricing, planning, and every other form of logistics so unbelievably easy that we cannot help but save more lives because of it. Because of them we are able to serve more of the riskiest of children, faster, and cheaper than many other programs in the region – and far better than we ever dreamed possible.

The upshot is that Mohammad is going home to his dad tomorrow. His mother is not going to be kept on this surgical sojourner any longer than was absolutely necessary. And Mohammad is one step closer to getting back to Iraq to go to school and beginning pursuing his big dreams!

Exactly one week after leaving his home country for surgery, Mohammad will be resting at home!
