Meet Sara (Twitter: SaraMuaeed)

Meet Sara. Sara hails from the still contested, disputed, and much-disrupted city of Kirkuk, Iraq. So disrupted, in fact, that there were reportedly four bomb explosions in Kirkuk the day before Sara left for Turkey.
Sara’s father works in a local anti-terrorist security unit. Given the backdrop of “Arabization” reaching back decades, conventional Kurdish storytelling now often says that all the terrorists are Arabs and that all the danger lives in the Arab part of city.
Those of us at the Preemptive Love Coalition can speak to that terrible stereotype by referencing our own run-ins with Kurdish terror conspirators. So in hopes of tearing down harmful stereotypes, we’re excited that Sara’s family has drawn so close to baby Deelan’s mother during their surgical sojourn together in Turkey – because Deelan’s mother is an Arab from Kirkuk.
We brought Sara to surgery because of a valve problem she is having that is threatening her life and possibly the life of her future children. At 14 years old, the window of operability for Sara is narrowing. And if she had not experienced your kindness and received surgery, she would likely die during pregnancy or childbirth due to the extreme toll such changes take on the body.
Today, under the skill of Prof. Dr. Sertaç Çiçek, Sara will receive the valve repair she needs and – GOD willing – will be set free to enjoy her adolescent and adult life with much joy and little fear.
Sara is scheduled for surgery on Thursday. More to come…

Dua Looking a Little Unsure as She Waits to be Taken to Surgery this Morning
February 26, 2010 by Jeremy · 1 Comment
There’s not much more to say… this picture pretty much captures the uneasiness of this part of the journey. So much hope, fear, trust, and distrust is inherent to the moments right before surgery.
Thanks for joining Dua and her family as they entrust her into the hands of the Turkish team… from their perspective, this is the only chance she’s got. And thanks for all you’ve done to fund her surgery to get her to this point.
Dua’s name means prayer. So as we all remember Dua right now, we honor her parents and honor GOD by entrusting her life to GOD in prayer. More to come after she emerges from surgery…

CREATING A VALVE FROM THE SAC AROUND DANAR’S HEART
January 7, 2010 by Jeremy · 1 Comment
Unfortunately, a lot of well-meaning donations and aid end up in places that donors never intended. It is our hope that pictures like this will give you an increasingly clear understanding of what it is you are helping us accomplish in the lives of Iraqi children suffering from congenital heart disease (CHD) after decades of intra-family marriage, malnutrition in war torn villages, and chemical warfare.
For older, more developed CHD kids it is often possible to use an artificial replacement when a valve is failing. But for younger babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers the artificial valves cannot grow with the child. Above we see Prof. Dr. Sertaç Çiçek with a piece of the pericardium (the sac around the heart) as he shapes it into a valve that ultimately stopped all the leakage for Danar, decreased the swollen size of his heart by 2-3x, and will decrease the strain on other vital organs.
So when you go to work tomorrow, you can be sure you are making a difference in the world! This is your money – indeed your hard work! – saving lives of Iraqi kids and setting them free into a hope-filled future!

We can do this because hundreds of people every year give generously to cover the material costs of surgery to impact the future of kids in Iraq. |
