VIDEO: Update From The Operating Room— “Thank You!”

September 26, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

This is our final O.R. update for Remedy Mission XI in Najaf, and we can’t think of a better time to thank you for the lives you’ve helped save than right now! You made this a happy ending.

You gave money that bought plane tickets that led to training that saved lives and led to Iraqi doctors saying things like “I never imagined I would be learning to operate like this!”

So thank you!

Also, please allow us to use this space to thank our partners at Living Light International for their role in setting up this mission with the Ministry of Health and the provincial government of Najaf. We could not do this without their expertise and their devotion to the cause and their belief in the vision toward which we are moving. Also, we are grateful to the International Children’s Heart Foundation and their cadre of staff and volunteers from Memphis to Melbourne. None of the staff at PLC have any of the medical skills necessary to save these sweet children. Our hopes and our vision for the future of Iraq would be dead in the water without Dr. Novick and ICHF.

In the video, we also share a bit about Hussain and his progress as well as info on our fast-approaching Remedy Mission XII, where we’ll introduce you to even more amazing children in need of lifesaving heart surgery. You can donate below to partner with us further, and keep reading here on the blog—the best is yet to come.

In The News: “Still Raw Wounds Greet US Medics In Iraq’s Fallujah”

September 25, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

A couple months ago, you helped us do something that others thought was impossible: we took an American medical team into Fallujah to save lives.

We’ve gotten used to being considered a little crazy, but Fallujah? Even we weren’t sure what to expect.

This was something new, and it was a massive, collaborative effort. We couldn’t—nor would we want to—have done it alone. Watch the above video to see an AFP story sharing more about that historic trip.

The expertise of our partners, Living Light International (LLI) and For Hearts And Souls (FHAS), made this historic mission a reality. The cultural and historical nuances of a place like Iraq’s Anbar province are vast, but the LLI team’s—and particularly Nadwa Qaragholi and Dr. Wieam Ahmed’s—ability to navigate culture and read between the lines cleared the way and made 7 operations possible during this trip.

But operations don’t happen without trained, competent doctors, which is why we’re also grateful for Dr. Kirk Milhoan and his team at FHAS. They used their expertise to pave the way for more missions that, hopefully, will be able to ease tensions between at-odds communities through the healing of children.

These friends of ours in the battle against The Backlog are invaluable, indispensable, and we can’t wait to work alongside them in Fallujah again soon!

In addition to savvy cultural guides and skilled doctors, these missions don’t happen without you—thank you for doing what others thought impossible!.

Every dollar you give helps us in our effort to eradicate The Backlog in Fallujah, and now we need your help going back.

Help us go back to Fallujah to save more lives by donating below!

A Peek Inside The O.R.—Watch Hussain’s Six Hour Surgery In Two Minutes!

September 23, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered what a surgery actually looks like? Have you ever wanted to peek into the O.R. to see what it takes to save a child’s life?

Considering how much you’ve donated, started your own fundraisers, and cheered kids on over the past few years, I’d say you deserve a glimpse of all that you’re making possible.

So I got permission from the local surgeons to set my camera up outside the operating theatre—for 7 hours! Little Hussain’s operation had a few twists and turns, but sitting outside that door watching it all unfold was well worth it, and now you can do the same. Click the video above (or click here) to watch the lifesaving surgery you gave to Hussain!

Would you like to make more surgeries like this possible? We’re going back to this same operating room in just a couple weeks, and we need your help saving more lives. Click here to donate directly, or go start your own fundraiser here—we love doing this alongside you!

“You fell while riding your bike? That’s awesome!”

September 20, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Remember this little boy?

Last February, I met Nassir and his father, who agreed to help me make a video sharing their surgery-search. It was my first time to do something like this and, as I’m sure you can imagine, it was a highly emotional experience.

Nassir’s father drove all over Iraq looking for a solution to his son’s heart problem. Many could tell him that his son was going to die, yet none could do anything to help. It was, as he described it, “a bad dream.” His boy couldn’t even run, play soccer, or ride a bike.

A photo of little Nassir 6 months after his lifesaving heart surgery in Najaf, Iraq.
Then, just a few days ago I rounded a hospital corner and Nassir and his father were standing there; they had come back for a check-up. After exchanging formalities, Nassir grinned and stuck his elbow in my face. “He hurt his arm riding his bike!” his father said, smiling. “That’s awesome!” I practically shouted back.

After we parted ways last February, Nassir went home, started racing other kids, and finally began getting the right kinds of hurts: scrapes and bruises, not a malformed heart or a pried-open chest.

A photo of Nassir's father showing off his son's surgery video on his cell phone.
They also showed me that they received the video we’d made together, and dad explained that he keeps it on his cell phone and shows anyone who will watch—“I tell them what you all did for me and my boy.”

I had several other things planned for that morning, but I couldn’t help dropping it all and sitting with Nassir’s father, re-watching that video on his phone, and listening as the cardiologist gave Nassir a clean bill of health. It was beautiful.

You and the rest of the Coalition made all this happen, and I hope you know how grateful Nassir, his father, and I are to you for that. You helped bring them out of their bad dream; you made it possible for us to celebrate scrapes!

Iraqis Praise Remedy Mission’s Success In Najaf!

August 28, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

These were just a few of the positive reactions we got after our first surgical mission to Najaf, and we’re finally going back! Developing heart surgery centers—and development in general—takes a lot of investment, time, and effort. One two-week mission, while good, just wasn’t enough. We’ll need many more if we’re going to bring these centers fully online. We’re in this for the long-haul.

So this will be our second surgical mission to the Holy City of Najaf, and we’re eager to meet the children and their families.

There is one child we’ve already met, though: do you remember Hussain? This sweet little boy missed his chance at a lifesaving surgery over the summer, but he’s getting another shot soon!

In fact, he’s #3 on our ‘to-save’ list. Meet him (and say hello by posting a note or photo) HERE, and stay tuned for more updates on Hussain and his friends in Najaf.

The mission starts the second week of September!
