OPTION #1: Raffle a pinwheel quilt at your local fabric store, quilting shop, civic or church event to raise money for Iraqi children in desperate need of heart surgery.
OPTION #2: Gather a group of quilters willing to donate a block of a pinwheel quilt plus (for example) $50 toward the health care of an Iraqi child in need of heart surgery. Send the pool of money AND the newly made quilt to the child as a symbol of childhood regained and of your concern for their well-being.
EXTRA CREDIT: Contact your favorite quilting, sewing, or crafting magazines about your creative quilting for the kids of Iraq.
THE JUSTIFICATION:
The heart of quilting is concern for others. We’ve never known a quilter who labored over the selection of fabric or the intricate design of their top-stitch just so they could show off how great they are. There always seems to be an underlying desire to care for someone else. To give a gift; to mark a date; to make a memory.
As thousands of kids in Iraq struggle with heart diseases that leaves them increasingly unable to breath, the pinwheel becomes an increasingly pointless toy for many Iraqi children. As much fun as pinwheels are, we are saddened by the way in which it has come to symbolize a childhood lost for too many Iraqi children today suffering from heart disease.
The good news is that generous quilters have the profound opportunity to use something already familiar to you - a pinwheel - to raise real dollars for Iraqi children in desperate need of heart surgery outside the country.
As generosity is already at the heart of what you do, Pinwheels for Quilters is simply our effort to match your kindness and skills to a need that will not otherwise be met without you. So call your friends and get started on your life-changing pinwheel quilt today!
