Aria is the Happiest Guy in Town a Year After Heart Surgery
June 25, 2009 by Ruth · 1 Comment

PLC interns and Family Advocates met with Aria and his family last Thursday. Oh, the hospitality of this wonderful family! Aria is 3 years old, has Down Syndrome, and has survived a heart surgery – yet is one of the happiest little guys we’ve met here. Although his heart was operated on nearly a year and a half ago, you could never tell. He loves the camera and perks up whenever one is pointed towards him. He’ll pause whatever he’s doing…pose for you…then run to you to see how it turned out.
For a majority of the time, we “played” with both Aria and his older sister, which consisted of dodging flying toys as they were thrown about the room – typical behavior of a three year old boy. The family is incredible, and treated us as the most honored of guests. Though not having much, their need would never be seen by what was given to us. We (the interns) hope to return to their home soon – as we want to continue building the relationship that has been started by PLC Family Advocates.
catch up

We’ve got lots of news to catch you up on. Four of our kids have undergone their heart surgeries in the past week! On February 18th both Juliana and Rebar had their turns. Then Aria on the 21st and Hussein on the 24th. And all of them have come through with flying colors!
Juliana (pictured below- calling family back in Iraq) underwent a 7 hour surgery to repair multiple heart defects that were risking her life- narrowing of the vessels and a hole in the interior wall of the heart. In her second day after surgery she already looked better, with the blue tinge in her skin gone!
Aria has had a little more difficulty recovering than most of the other kids do. But he’s now looking better, beginning to eat more normally and being monitored closely for some blood pressure problems.
Rebar was transferred out of the intensive care unit only 2 days after his surgery and has been recovering at rapid speed. And Hussein as well has had a smooth recovery and is on his way back to normal health. These kids seem to bounce back so quickly that it’s hard to remember how severely their heart problems were affecting them before.
Four surgeries. One week. And lifelong impact that no one can count.

Waiting

No one likes to wait- especially when you’re 2 and 3 years old and undergoing medical tests! However- in this case it will all pay off well in the end! Aria and Rebar are currently in Jerusalem in the care of our partner organization while they wait their turns for heart surgery in the coming weeks. They have both completed the preliminary tests of blood work and echocardiograms (an ultrasound view of the heart) necessary for their upcoming heart surgeries. Extra time was spent on Aria’s echocardiogram as there are several problems with his heart and doctors expect his surgery to be more complicated. Despite all the “annoyances” they have endured these past weeks, both boys are full of smiles and winning the hearts of the local staff.

Aria, 2 years old from Northern Iraq
Doctors at the October screening in Jordan found that little Aria has the features of Down Syndrome and six fingers on his right hand, as well as a heart defect commonly found in Down children. He can overcome the heart defect with surgery which should allow him to grow into adulthood. Aria arrived safely in Jordan today and is awaiting surgery!

Rebar, 3 years old from Northern Iraq
Rebar was born with a large hole between the ventricles of his heart. The cardiologist who saw him in October in Jordan put him down for “intervention in near future” due to the risk that developing pulmonary hypertension could leave him inoperable. He has reached Jordan and is waiting for transfer across the river into Jordan.
