See What Noor Is Counting Down To!

July 1, 2011 by · Comments Off

Noor and her friends count down the hours until their surgery.

We all remember our firsts, don’t we? Our first time going to school. Our first time riding a bike. But do you remember what it was like right before those moments?

Whether it was waiting to unwrap your new bike or try on your new shoes for the first day of school, the moments leading up to those firsts are just as memorable.

Imagine what it would be like to be waiting for your remedy, though. Imagine being able to think about all the things that would soon be possible once your heart was made strong…for the very first time!

There’s a lot of that imagining going on here in the hospital. Today, I sat on the bed of Abbas, one of the first children to be saved this Remedy Mission, and I can honestly say that I’ve never heard anyone laugh that hard while in a hospital bed! He kept smiling and kissing my hand and in between smiles and kisses I asked him about the very first thing he was going to do with his new heart once he left the hospital.

Abbas said, “I’m going to run everywhere I go!”

Abbas’s one day closer to being able to run – for the first time!

Right now little Noor is counting down the hours until her heart is the one that’s made strong. I love this picture because it shows three children, with Noor in the middle, all patiently awaiting their firsts.

If you haven’t caught how all of this is possible – it’s because of YOU! It’s because so many of you chose to donate for the first time, become a monthly sponsor for the first time or tell the stories of these children for the first time.

Without those firsts – Noor wouldn’t be awaiting hers.

3 Reasons You Can Give Someone To Show Them Iraq Is Changing For The Better

June 26, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Rayed smiling before his lifesaving heart surgery.

Yesterday on the drive to southern Iraq we ran over a pothole. Actually, we ran over several potholes.

The biggest pothole of the day – and the same one that made the loudest noise as our van clung to its parts – was the same one that caused my Iraqi friend next to me to groan and say, “I just want to see change. I want to see something different now that the war’s over. Where are the new roads? Where are the signs that Iraq is changing?”

The next pothole we hit launched us both into a conversation attempting to answer that question. It kept us busy for most of the drive, but we kept coming back to the same 3 immediate signs that Iraq is changing for the better.

Sign #1: Right now, families are traveling from all over southern Iraq to come to this Remedy Mission. Before, families were lining up to leave the country trying to find the doctors that could save their children from their heart defects. Today, families are lining up outside a hospital in southern Iraq, waiting for their child’s chance at a lifesaving heart surgery. For the first time, families don’t need to leave the country to find the cure.

Sign #2: This week, a Sunni family will hand their child over to a Shiite doctor to be saved. In 2007, at the height of the violence in Iraq between Sunni and Shiites, this would have been unheard of. Now, the disease that’s threatening their children is bringing them together!

Sign #3: The notorious “brain drain” that happened when 20,000 of the 34,000 registered doctors in Iraq fled during the war is being reversed. During our last Remedy Mission in northern Iraq we met one of the doctors who had returned. Today we’re not only seeing doctors return, but – thanks to Remedy Missions – the doctors who never left are being equipped and trained, too. Their training is changing the tide of healthcare in Iraq.

So, the next time you hear someone looking for a reason to believe Iraq is changing for the better, start by giving them these 3.

Or better yet, show them the above photo of Rayed smiling before he received his lifesaving heart surgery during Remedy Mission V. Then tell them to stay tuned because Remedy Mission VI is already underway here in southern Iraq!

Have You Ever Seen How Much It Costs To Save 20 Lives? Here Are The Numbers:

June 6, 2011 by · Comments Off

One of PLC's core values is financial transparency.

As we’ve looked across the landscape of organizations working in Iraq and around the world we’ve found ourselves wanting to know more about how their money is spent. We figure you are the same way – and we think you deserve to know. The scandalous press and allegations surrounding big name do-gooders, their books, and their organizations have all caused us at PLC to ask honest questions about how we can be fully transparent with you about your donations and our management of them in Iraq.

So here are a few real-time financial notes that will remain here for posterity’s sake:

- PLC spent $41,068.38 for airfare and hotels for Remedy V

- PLC spent $30,000 to the International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF) to procure their surgical expertise for this mission

- ICHF made approximately $20,000 in in-kind medical gifts to the mission (directly to the hospital in southern Iraq; not on our balance sheet)

- We have not finished tallying the field expenses for Remedy V yet but we anticipate it will account for an additional $1,790-$2,000

- Our partners in southern Iraq budgeted $1,500 for educational instruction

- More than $1,620 in visa expenses were covered directly by the Iraqi Ministry of Health (MOH) in Baghdad

- Security and transportation was provided to us, free of charge, by the MOH (worth, perhaps $10,000 as an in-kind contribution)

- Food, housing, and all local accommodations were provided by the MOH (worth more than $20,000 as an in-kind contribution)

We estimate the total cost of this particular mission to run all parties approximately $133,361. Our agreement with the MOH will subsidize approximately 77% of those costs, with roughly $2,800 for this particular mission coming from PLC’s international donor pool.

Our next mission – Remedy VI – in southern Iraq is scheduled for June 25th.

Here’s the bottom line to all this: you are indispensable to our work. We cannot help Iraqis reach their desired vision for the future without you. We cannot eradicate the backlog of untold thousands of children waiting in line for lifesaving heart surgery. And we cannot create the systems they need to do this work on their own without you.

But….

You are not alone! This is not a “hand-out” program in which you unload your hard-earned money into a foreign country (no matter how poor or decimated), without calling on local families, organizations, and government to carry the majority of the financial burden. This is what we mean when we talk about development. This is what we mean when we talk about graduating a program from foreign aid.

They cannot do it without you. But hopefully in the next few years that will no longer be true. Stay tuned in the coming months as we begin publicly exploring our EXIT STRATEGY and what exciting promises that holds for our dear friends here in Iraq!

With you,

Alawi Receives His Much Needed Heart Surgery!

February 21, 2011 by · Comments Off

This morning Alawi got the heart surgery we’ve all been waiting for!

Local doctors and nurses – alongside the ICHF team – took a minimalistic approach to his repair, seeking to do as little “trauma” to his heart as possible. Unfortunately, after surgery, it seemed the minimalist approach wasn’t holding as well as they hoped. They decided to perform an even more robust correction that would make Alawi even stronger than he already was.

So Alawi went yet again into the operating room just as bravely as he went into his first operation.

Alawi’s a reminder of what we’re committed to – we will do whatever it takes to make each child and each Iraqi doctor and nurse into the healthiest child and most-skilled doctor or nurse they can be.

Hoping for the best still never makes it easy to watch a child go in for surgery.

We could not do this without you! You are our heroes and you inspire us to keep going so much! Stay tuned to get the latest update on Alawi from the ICU via our Facebook Page!

His Heart Condition is Threatening His Life – Have You Met Alawi?

February 18, 2011 by · 632 Comments

You need to.

This just may be the cutest and most adorable boy in Iraq.

Alawi Hussein is just under three and a half years old and he was born with a congenital heart defect.

At 9 months old, instead of taking bets on what his first word was going to be, his parents were coping with the devastating news that Alawi had a heart problem. It was a heart problem, like most heart problems in Iraq, that could only be fixed outside of Iraq.

The list of countries that could help him was long.

Iran.

Turkey.

Jordan.

India.

America.

Basically – many other countries except the one he was born in.

While the list of opportunities was long, the list of actual possibilities for Alawi was short.

Hearing about all the doctors overseas that can heal your son is simply cruel if you don’t have the money – or even a passport – to pursue the option.

His family had to learn to enjoy the time they had with Alawi and just hope for a remedy the doctors might have somehow missed.

That surprise came this month when they were called by their local cardiologist here in southern Iraq and told that Alawi no longer needs to go overseas to be saved, because of a team of doctors and nurses that was being brought in to save his life at the hospital just fifteen minutes from their home

It was thirty-two months later than they were hoping but remedy finally came to southern Iraq.

We still hope that Alawi’s family will visit foreign countries someday, but not as last chance medical tourists!

You are the Remedy.

You bring in medical teams every time you give. Our medical teams teach Iraqi doctors and nurses. Our medical teams save lives. So Iraqi doctors and nurses learn how to save lives. Our medical team goes home. The Iraqi’s keep saving lives.

It’s one beautiful domino affect!

We hope we can save Alawi’s life this week… and not just because he’s one of the cutest boys in Iraq! Follow Alawi’s story this week on the blog and on our Facebook page (<-- link) to see what comes next...

Headed Home While Remedy Continues To Gain Momentum

December 22, 2010 by · Comments Off

img_6392

At the end of the first Remedy Mission in Southern Iraq we served 22 families, corrected 45 heart defects and gave a collective 7,000 hours of training to more than 50 local doctors and nurses!

Kids conquered heart disease together, families built new networks of friendships, doctors gained mentors, nurses gathered inspiration, and a foundation was laid for what might someday become a fully functional, locally-run pediatric cardiac surgery center.

Thanks to YOU, the momentum has continued from our first Remedy Mission in Sulaymaniyah last August to the latest mission in Nasiriyah. As we get ready for 2011, both Sulaymaniyah and Nasariyah are preparing for 8 more Remedy Missions this next year!

The growing coalition of partners that continue to bring Remedy include all of us at PLC, our freinds at the International Children’s Heart Foundation, Living Light International, Kurdistan Save the Children, both the Iraqi and Kurdish governments along with local governments and ministries of health, and you!

Without your support, there would be no remedies like what we’re witnessing.

With your support, this will only be the beginning!

With each story that’s told through these missions, a growing community is being drawn to the people of Iraq. As a community, we’re not only beginning to grow in our understanding and love but we’re tangibly waging peace in both our local communities and in communities throughout the Middle East.

It’s a pleasure to be standing alongside you. Let’s press on!

Ritha Passes His Last Test Before Discharge & Baby Hassan Leaves ICU

December 17, 2010 by · Comments Off

Ritha had one assignment before he could go home. Blow up a latex glove, something that he could never have done before his surgery.

img_6193

He kept blowing until the nurses had to stop him because it was about to POP!

With flying colors, Ritha passed his test and was sent home with his father!

More latex gloves are being passed out and one by one, kids are getting to go home!

img_6287

The ICU nurses hated letting Hassan go but there was no more reason to keep him from moving to the ward with his mother. Today, Hassan was freed of monitors and tubes and carried out to be with his family!

Beds are losing their patients and families are winning back their children as this Remedy Mission nears its end!
