Cardiac Caths Save Lives, Time, Space, Money, & Dodge Dishonor for Females Before Marriage

This week we were able to help three children without subjecting them to the trauma of an open-heart surgery. A procedure in which a catheter is inserted through the femoral artery, all the way into the heart, and ultimately used to correct a number of different heart defects.
Recovery times from these types of procedures are considerably shorter and the procedure itself is considerably less risky for the patient. These patients don’t stay “parked” in an already crowded Intensive Care Unit and typically end up going home in a much shorter period of time than even the fastest surgery patients.

The International Children’s Heart Foundation team prefers to use this method whenever possible, but finds it particularly helpful with older females who might otherwise be considered less desirable for marriage with a huge scar down the sternum.
All three kids who received cardiac cath intervention this week are discharged and playing safely at home; even while we have two in ICU and a handful still in the ward.
Thanks for making our training and surgery mission happen this week. This Remedy Mission and the various diagnostic, interventional, surgical, and administrative techniques learned locally this week will continue to save lives long after all these kids go home!

Taban Recovering well
March 1, 2009 by Ruth · 3 Comments
Taban is back in Kurdistan after having her life saving surgery in Turkey. She’s recovering well at a relatives home in the city where we live. She’s from small village about a hour away so the doctor asked if she would stay here in the city for a few weeks so that we, along with the local peadiatric cardiologist can monitor her progress. Both Taban and her mom said that they had a wonderful time in Turkey, their experience was “perfect and could not have been better”.
Taban is 13 years old and has not been attending school for the past couple of years so we’re trying, along with our partner organisation here to encourage her to start going to school again.
We’re going again to visit her this afternoon in the home of her relatives. Here’s a picture of Taban recovering in hospital after her surgery.
Recovering In Children’s Ward

Today, I found both Tarza and Rezhin out of the ICU and in the ward. While I was visiting this afternoon the girls were munching on Doritos and peanut M&M’s. It seems as if they are on their way to a full recovery.

Updates on the 4 girls
October 22, 2008 by Jeremy · 12 Comments
The 4 girls who have been going through this journey together- Kale, Shanaw, Sara and Hevi- all have updates!
Kale has been successfully recovering from her heart surgery that took place on October 7th. Today she had an echocardiogram to check up on some fluid that had gathered around her heart. They found that the fluid was decreasing however and there is no cause for alarm. She is showing such good progress that they think next week will be her final echocardiogram and that soon she can be released to return to Iraq.
Shanaw has been up and around and showing off her amazing smile ever since her surgery on September 28th. She’s shown nothing but improvement and energy and life! She’ll also have her last echocardiogram next week and soon be on her to be reunited with the rest of her family and friends in Iraq.
Sara underwent her surgery on October 15th and has been recovering with her gentle, loving father by her side. On the 19th she was moved out of the ICU and has since been up walking and beginning to eat more and gaining strength. Sara is recovering well from her surgery but remains in the hospital today recovering from an unrelated infection with the help of antibiotics. The doctors report that she is healing normally and is on her way to a full recovery soon.
Hevi has had the longest wait of all 4 girls. Hevi and her mother arrived at the treatment center on July 21st and have been patiently waiting ever since for the doctors to make their final decision about Hevi’s surgery. Due to the uniqueness of her heart problems the surgeons had to determine if surgery was the best treatment and if it would really be the solution. On October 15th the surgeons finally gave Hevi and her mother the news that surgery was an option but, that unfortunately, it would be very risky. The decision was left up to Hevi’s parents to decide what to do and they decided today not to do it. The risks and unknowns are huge either way. They still have until Sunday to decide finally if they want Hevi to have the surgery or not. This family has had a very long road of waiting and worry. We’re thankful to be part of Hevi’s treatment and to support her and her family in this time.
Shkar returning to Iraq

Shkar, who underwent heart surgery on August 6th, has been healing rapidly and is already on his way back home to Iraq with his mother. The doctors cleared Shkar to return home after they had conducted the final echo-cardiogram and removed the last stitches. The surgeons reported that Shkars heart surgery was relatively easy, compared to other cases, so his recovery has been pretty fast. We’re excited for Shkar to return home and start living life with a strong heart!
Shkar recovering from successful surgery!

Shkar underwent 2 surgeries in the past few days to fully correct the problems with his heart. After many long hours in surgery and his mother pacing the halls, Shkar is now recovering and able to walk around a bit. Today, Shkar and his mother called their family back home in Iraq to tell them about the successful surgery. The outlook for Shkar is so bright and he and his mother are so thankful for everyone who has been part of this hope-filled journey!

This little sweetheart came back successfully from surgery a few months ago. When we met Arya he couldn’t walk due to his heart problem. We wanted to keep you apprized of his progress and show you some evidence of your successful efforts!

Baveel

Two weeks ago Baveel came to visit us at the office. We lost electricity just before he arrived so understandably he wasn’t’ able to make the climb to our office on the 6th floor so we just met outside in the car. He’s recovering reasonably well from his surgery and looks super cool with his new hair style which he had done in Jordan! On the down side, he isn’t eating well and is quite underweight which is hindering him from reaching his full potential. He also needs to start building up his exercise tolerance; he had been spending the majority of his time indoors playing computer games. I explained the importance of eating well and being more active and gave him some ideas as to how to work on these things. I’m hoping that when we see him again next week that he will have his appetite back and that he’ll be playing less computer games and instead be playing much more outdoors with his friends. If you’re inclined towards prayer, lift up one for Baveel as he continues to recover.

Aria, Juliana and Rebar all returned to their homes and families in Iraq on March 23rd after having successful heart surgeries and recoveries in Jordan!
These kids are returning home as totally new little people! The blue tinge to their skin is gone. They can run and play like all the other kids. They can breathe normally and have boundless energy! The outlook for their future is bright!
We’re all part of something huge here- bringing hope for life to kids and their families and a whole country that desperately needs it. Thanks for being on board with us! Who ever thought shoes could be part of something this amazing?
