Cross-Posted: “ISIS Militants Declare Islamist ‘Caliphate’”

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, now formally dismissing “of Iraq and Syria” from its title, declared an Islamic state stretching from northeastern Iraq to Aleppo, Syria today.

The declaration dubbed the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as caliph—or political successor to the prophet Mohammed—a role that hasn’t been filled since 1924.
