Hi! My name is Destinee Barrera. I am currently a second year teacher at an elementary school in North Carolina. Teaching has always been my number one passion, but through having the opportunity to spend two summers in Greece, God has given me a heart for social justice – especially in regards to the refugee crisis.
This summer I have been given the chance to live and work in Iraq as an English intern with Preemptive Love. During my time there, I will be working with a team to create and run an immersive summer program for Yazidi refugee children who have been displaced by war. We will be working to provide instruction in the English language through fun and engaging activities.
In addition to seeing the children grow in their knowledge of English vocabulary, I am also excited for them to have the chance to be part of a social experience that allows them to just be kids and enjoy the summer with their peers!
